First Untitled for me and didnt regret at all making the trip to Antwerp!
Quest did it for me!! Huge set he played! All about variaton and thats what keeps it interesting.
I expected a big crowd, but because of the change of date there was probably a lesser turn up then expected. Anyway for me the amount of people was just perfect.
Big up Untitled crew, sound was good, location was really nice and heard a lot of good music!
This was definitely not the last Untitled for me, so you can expect me at the Deep Medi Night.
Cool to see everyone who is coming to DMZ/FWD, it's gonna be a blast I'm sure :).

Now on SATURDAY (2/2) instead of friday.

Untitled: Unfortunatly, due to a double booking of Pier19 (which was only brought to our attention a couple of days a go) we are forced to move our party to Saturday instead of Friday. We've tried everything in our power to find a decent replacement for the venue but none was found. Hopefully this doesn't interfere too much with everybody's plans and hope to welcome another overwhelming turn-up like our previous editions. Let's make this another memorable party!

But not only has the date switched, the line-up has undergone a slight change as well. Since Silkie has to play in Leeds on Saturday we've invited Cyrus. A top producer and dj with several releases on Tectonic. So for those people who were still buried in books two weeks ago when he played in Brussels, this is your chance to check him out!

2007 has been a big year for dubstep in Belgium!!
Parties grew a lot a bigger, starting with Bunzer0's dubstep night at Beursschouwburg, the Stainage Parties and their part in the Dour Festival, Mate who put dubstep on the Dissonant festival and 10 days off, Untitled organising regulary their events in Antwerp, climaxing at the end of the year with the Aeclectrick release party which attracted a big crowd, one that no one could have expected and the dubstep programmation at AB (twice this year!).
2007 was also the year for other crews to step up and start organising events like 54 kolaktiv of Brussels and Solpher with his Substyle parties.
Shouts go out to Psycho for his Blastoze magazine that will lead to a bigger impact of dj's/producers in other countries. This year Bunzer0, Grimelock and the Bambu crew already played outside Belgium and the list will probably grow bigger in 2008.
As for releases Aeclecktrick set the tone, but Stainage will see its release in 2008, with artist Grimelock, Alchemyst, Saviour and Bunzer0 (more about this later!).
Also our own webstream Reload Radio got bigger by attracting a wide selection of artists. But national radio showed some interest too in dubstep and asked dubstep artists on regular basis to come and play on the Jungle Fever show.

2008 already promises to be massive with parties like:

>Who is dj sensu?
I'm a DJ residing in Brussels. I've been DJ'ing for a bit more than six years now. When i started, i mostly mixed experimental and ambient stuff, but i switched to mixing beats as i felt the experimental and ambient scene was at times a bit too closed for me. I've been a resident at the Statik Dancin' minimal parties (the first two years of its existence) and play all over Brussels these days as well as for other venues all over Belgium and sometimes abroad.

>What is your musical background?
My dad is a classical musician, so i grew up in a very musical environment. I've studied playing the piano a bit, but was too impatient for it. Music has been around me all my life, and early on, i started listening to electronic stuff, moving into experimental stuff quite fast. A few weeks ago, i've performed with my father together for the first time, me behind the decks as he was reciting a poem. This meant a lot to me.

>How did you came in contact with dubstep?
By reading an article on grime, i was aware of what was going on in England, and when Hardwax in Berlin started selling Burial records (i go to Berlin regularly to buy records), i was hooked immediately.

>You combine minimal techno and dubstep, what in your opinion do they
have in common?
It's possible to mix them in my opinion. That's the first thing. People should mix up different things. A lot of dubstep records have a minimal techno influence and on the other hand, dubstep has been influencing minimal techno and house music a lot. I like music to be an open thing. A DJ should play (in my opinion) different genres and not necessarily stick to just mixing one genre. It's cool to surprise your audience and it's necesary i feel to give an underground answer to people like 2 Many DJ's who are mixing up different genres and styles, but do it in such a way that it becomes a commercial and not very artistic thing.

>What are your biggest influences now (dubstep, non-dubstep)?
My biggest influences are not necessarily musical, although i've been greatly inspired by avant-garde electronic music from the fifties and sixties, and many things after that such as Kraftwerk, Detroit techno, modern experimental music. I guess what influences me a lot these days is watching movies and reading about cinema. The way artistic creation takes on a life of its own is something that inspires me deeply. A few years ago for example, i became fascinated by the way MGM in Hollywood would recruit all the best theatre writers, dancers and choreographers to produce their musicals. These movies were at that time (the fifties) perceived as reacing very high artistic levels. I enjoy reading about stuff like that and it inspires me to aim for something that i guess one would refer to as quality.
As to modern music, these days, i'm very much impressed by house records coming from America and England as they deliciously update the Basic Channel style and include new influences (such as dubstep) easily into their sound.

>What is Manna?
Manna is a project that aims to organise things on Sunday afternoons in Brussels. The collective consists of people that are in Meakusma, Forwart and myself. We have so far organised two events ourselves (with guests Benjamin Brunn and Shackleton) and have participated in the Noûs Festival (where we highlighted the Workshop label) and the Open Circuit concept of Kunstencentrum Belgie in Hasselt. Our aim is to bring new and challenging music to people and do this in an accessible way. We have a cook that provides food for the occasion. Right now we're planning new things, but it seems to be very difficult in Brussels to find spaces where you can organise something on a Sunday afternoon in the kind of way we want to do it.

>What is your feeling about the belgian dubstep scene?
I honestly don't know what to say. Personally i think there's many talented people in the scene and i enjoy what they do enormously. On the other hand, i don't feel well placed to comment about it. I am not a dubstep DJ, i just play the records i like from the genre. I really hope that dubstep will manage to keep things fresh for a long time. There's many creative people in the genre that have produced beautiful records already. What i've noticed with young (Belgian) dubstep DJ's and producers is that they have a very big openness towards other genres and other ways of producing music. Let's hope this goes on a bit, as it's probably the only way forward.

>Is not promoting yourself on the internet a deliberate decision?
Like i said before, i do not consider myself to be a dubstep DJ. Next to that, i don't like forums on the internet very much. I use my myspace and my blog to provide info on myself and the things i'm interested in. Getting involved with internet communities would be too much work for me. I generally try to stay away from it a little bit.

>You mostly play for an audience that isnt too familiar with dubstep
,does that influence your selection?
My selection of records is basically my new stuff combined with older things i still play or have re-discovered. Playing dubstep to people not used to it is easy i find. Many people respond well to it. I remember playing Burial records in my sets at Statik Dancin' a few years ago and people discovering the genre through that and loving it.

>Do you have plans productionwise?
I produce and sometimes perform live with a friend. We have a project called Kiono in which we fuse many of the genres i play. Although we have a lot of tracks already, we do not play often as we try to play as live as possible. A lot depends on improvisation, which sometimes works and sometimes does not. But we definitely will continue with this.

>What is in your opinion your biggest achievement so far?
That is very difficult to say for me as i'm generally looking forward. I'm very happy that i've been able to work with some of the people that i have admired for a long time. Music has opened my eyes to the world. But i think i still have a long way to go. I've been lucky so far in the sense that i've been able to do amazing things already, but i still have a lot of ideas and desires.

>In what way do you want to see yourself evolve? (dj/production/promotionwise)
I cannot say. We'll see ...

>Where can we see you play in the near future?

Rustie killed it yesterday at Meakusma!! Combining glitch, crunk, grime and hiphop on a soundsystem with a big bass made me think that his live show was probably one of the best things I heard in a long time!!

Just want to say that I was amazingly dissapointed by Rusko. The lack of variation in his set makes me feel like it was the worst dubstep set I saw in my life. Enjoyed about half an hour, highpoint was definitely when he played Cockney Thug, but after hearing the same kind of records over and over again I had enough. Hope he plays a better set in Antwerp.
Nevertheless I had a good time, mixingwise he is a really good dj, and the crowd seemed to like it as well. So the vibes were surely present, but I had a bit the feeling I was on a drum and bass party 4 years ago...
Wadadda couldn't convince me either, his live set didn't really look live, because he was actually just standing behind his laptop

Location was cool, and the bass was loud, a bit too much at times.
Can't really comment on the rave dj's because I left 20 minutes after Sike started, which sounded more like drum and bass then rave to me.
Big up on the organisation, was a great party nevertheless, just didn't feel it musicaly.

On the contrary the Radiophonic festival party one weekend ago, was one of the best parties I went to since a long time. Bunzer0 and Grimelock both played really good sets! Definitely the best set I heard of Bunzer0, nice 2step vibes, good mixing, and he seemed to have a good time himself! They both proved that they are our 2 best dj/production acts coming out of this country. Joker played more a dubstep set then a grimey one. His nerves didnt really have the best influence on his mixingskills, but that improved at the end.
Great party in a cool location (chapel). I hope to see more parties happening there in the future!

Radiophonics festival invites Joker, 18 year old coming from Bristol, isn't really a known producer here, but has been described by Pitchfork as 'the hottest new instrumental grime producer'. He started out as a dj, but turned to production later. Now he has a release on Pinch's label Earwax (you'll probably recognise Stuck in the System and Grimey Princess).

DJ MEHDI (Main Hall 01:30)
French-based DJ MEHDI is one of the leading names on the ultra hip Ed Banger label (the label of Daft Punk manager Pedro Winter, which has illustrious names such as Justice and Uffie). Since leaving his hip hop past behind him (he was part of Mafia K'1 Fry and produced the albums of 113) he has worked with Daft Punk and Cassius, and, as a DJ, will ensure a fat party with lots of hip hop and electro.

To complete the party ETIENNE DE CRÉCY will be bringing his first ever live set onto Belgian soil. A first from the man jointly responsible with Alex Gopher for 'Superdiscount', the album that freed house from its shackles. He has made 'Superdiscount 2' with help from Cassius, the band with which he has already written the Motorbass story.

Via de Crécy we come to PHILIPPE ZDAR (Philippe Cerboneschi to quote his official name) who found himself in the eye of the French Touch storm in the mid-nineties with Cassius and had mega hits with 'Cassius 99' and 'La Mouche'. With the new Cassius album '15 Again' he won over the AB and Pukkelpop early this year, and to close this fingerlickin' Exit line-up Zdar promises us a steaming DJ-set.

When did you start getting involved in music?
When I was about 12 years old I bought Fat of the Land (Prodigy), you can say that I got introduced by this record with breakz. My first contact with dj'ing was with hiphop, starting with Run DMC and Nas (It was written), Dr Dre, Beasty Boys. I started scratching and got into turntabelism. I still buy hiphop now (direction Stonesthrow). Trough hiphop I got into drum and bass and jungle. I got more interested in breakz with mc's and then I found 'Are you really from the ends' (Jammer vs. Bigga remixes), my first grime vinyl. I started to listen to Garage or/and Sublow, I bought Ammunition records and souljah releases which I found in Stress da Bass and Doctor Vinyl (record shops in Brussels). On the internet I was looking for garage/sublow with mc's. I heard of dublate.net but I never ordered records through the internet. Because it's easy to discover things in record shops, I prefered to buy my vinyl there. I knew some names form the internet what made it more easy for me to find the records in the stores. That's how I found my first dubstep records. Now my focus lies mainly in dubstep, but I also buy and play a lot of jazz, hiphop, funk, jungle, 4*4, some core, dub, reggae, garage and mainly everything I like.

Describe yourself musicaly
On dubstep parties I play dubstep/grime, I like dubstep in the direction of 2562 but I also like Kromestar or the whole grime thing. On parties where other music gets played my record choice goes from funk, reggae, breakcore, breaks, garage, hiphop, jazz, jungle to minimal. I prefer really long sets where you get the time to build up your set and where you can play everything you like. I find it hard to focus on one genre, but dubstep is an excellent genre to mix other music with. You can play it with reggae/dub but also go more into the direction of minimal or breakz.

What is 54 Kolaktiv?
54 consists out of a group of friends that used to do different
creative things but all seperatly. Last year we decided to group our creativity and thats how 54 Kolaktiv got started. At this moment we don't really have a clear vision of our crew, since our crew is still too young for that. The crew consist out of +/- 20 people. The people who are doing something with music are: Ezzy, Yurin, Mezzdub, Walrus, Rudykarton, Viktor Sagat… Apart from that you got people who are busy doing their thing in graffiti, music, drawing, animation, graphic design, photography, film... Some other names: Peachlover, Soundboi Marla Johnson, Nalish Karkhalash, Pinckers, Tentakelman, Gerardfranz, Paranoiak, Ketaminny Mouse, Billy From Belgium...
In the future you can expect some expositions and parties.
On our first party mostly breakcore got played, but there will be more dubstep in the future. The goal of our parties is not to bring one genre, but a wide variety of different styles.
We got a lot of plans and ideas and we hope to realize them soon!

Can you see a difference between Brussels and other cities? Do you think Brussels has got his own sound
No, for me dubstep has got no strict sound, its a genre with a lot of different influences. The only way to describe dubstep is saying that the beat is ranging between 135 and 145 bpm, but with influences out of techno, grime, 2step, reggae, hiphop...
If Brussels would have it's own sound and style, that would mean, it think, that Brussels producers tried to copy eachother. I like the idea that dubstep still has not a real sound, too bad that more and more new productions are going in the same direction. I hope there never will be subgenres in dubstep. Giving names is dangerous, because that way you exclude other things.

What do you think of the Belgian dubstep scene, what's unique about it?
There is not really something unique about Belgian dubstep, we got a lot of nice parties, good dj's and some good producers. I don't really think there is a lot of difference with let's say the Netherlands, Germany or Finland. Belgium is certainly in the top 5 of countries that are doing good things with dubstep (especially for the size of our country). We
can thank a lot to Bunzer0, who is giving our country a lot of
attention internationally.

Is there any Belgian dj or producer who you really like at this moment?
Bunzer0 is the dj with the most skills and the biggest amount of fresh stuff. I've already seen him play a lot of times, but he still keeps on surprising me. I haven't yet got the chance to see Flow and Fhex play live, but I like their mixes a lot. Grimelock are one of the only crews who keep promoting the grime sound, which is a good thing. There are not really bad dubstep dj's in this country, but I haven't found another Pinch, N-Type, or Joe Nice here. But like I said before, if you put this in context of our little country, we're doing really well!
Dj vanno is together with bunzero the guy who made me listen and know about dubstep... Together there are technicly and slection wise the two best djs... Many people forget vanno as a dubstep dj but he was the first to present us a dubstep party... (mutant hiphop).

You think it is easy to break through as a Belgian dj/producer?
It's always a difficult job to break trough as a dj, unless you got involved from the beginning and spend all of your time in it. That is what Bunzer0 did and now he can thank his international fame to it. If some of our producers get some releases, I think they are going to get booked in the next couple of years.

How do you see the scene evolve in the folowing years?
I hope the scene will keep on innovating itself, there are already too much things that sound too much alike. I hope on hearing more halfstep with 4x4 influences. I miss the basses that you can feel instead of hearing them. People sometime sneed to quit the wobwob a bit and go on with some meditation or 4*4 business or just find a perfect balance between the two. I sometimes miss the bass like on I (loefah remix) where you cant hear the bass but just feel the bass. No wopwop, just a good kick in the belly. But for now there are still a lot of good things that get released to keep me going further into this genre.

How do you see your own sound evolving?
At this moment my sound is still really basic, I haven't really got a lot of time to put time in producing, because of dj'ing and school.

What do you see as an important moment in your dj carreer?
My 5 hour set in the Tavernier was one of the best experiences I got in the last years. Going from funk to 90's, breakz, garage and dubstep.
Subfm b2b with Bunzer0 was a lot of fun, because I never expected to play with him. Playing in Portugal this summer was a great experience. Especially Kubik was great, because of the amazing location. Met a lot of nice people overthere. (Again thanks to Conspira, Mushug, Joel, Sofia,…)

How do you describe the mix you presented here?
I describe it as a chilled mix to listen at home or in the car. Changing from dub to vinyl, to dub because I only got one cdplayer (if I got another I would have played more dubs). You can't compare this mix to something what I would play on a party. If you are curious about that you should come and see me play. Hermutt Lobby, track 4, is a Belgium name you should keep an eye on, they are a promising crew out of Verviers (Liege), making electronic beats.

Dubstep kills Jungle?

Seriously? No, but apparantly some people think different.
I remember having read something about this on the dubstepforum about Dogs On Acid. But now this discussion is being held in our country. Reason? Kastor playing on Jungle Fever (Studio Brussel) two weeks ago to promote his party Untitled.
Some peope reacted kinda heavy on this, saying that dubstep does not belong on a show that plays Jungle.
Reactions like this got posted on the breakz.be forum:

i can completely understand the problem some people have with jungle fever going dubstep - it isn't the first time either..

all taste discussions aside, you dubstep heads can't deny that you're using the dnb promotional channels: you're all so keen to distinguish yourselves from the so-called dinosaur dnb seems to have become in your minds,
but you don't seem to realise the hypocrisy of doing so through all the existing DNB promo channels: why else would you even consider playing dubstep on jungle fever? cause you guys seem to believe dubstep is gonna replace dnb at some point?? it's a completely different genre;
so stay off dnb dj's myspaces, keep your dubstep flyers,
and stay the fuck off my dnb radio show!

dnb is having a hard enough time in belgium without it being undermined
by a genre as musically unfullfilling as dubstep...there's plenty of fresh new music around so i don't see why there's any need for it!
and you can all marvel at the narrowmindedness of this site and it's inhabitants - but they do make a bloody good point! it's always the same old camp make the same old we're too cool for school statements,

In my opinion dubstep doesn't have the right channels to promote the music. Dubstep grew out of 2step/garage/grime, but this kind of scene never existed in Belgium, so it grew out of the people in the jungle-scene who were interested in the new things dubstep had to offer. Having said this, the relationship between drum and bass and dubstep isn't so hard to see. Sure they sound totaly different, but what other channels is dubstep going to use?
Another thing, dubstep and drum and bass are often combined in this country, as they are being played at the same parties.

I don't think dubstep is undermining anything, IF dubstep would replace dubstep (which i'm sure will never ever happen), it can only be a natural progress, you can't stop this by not playing dubstep on a drum and bass show.
Dubstep parties at this moment attract a crowd at highest of 300 people, don't think this genre has the ability at all to replace drum and bass, and it never had the intention to do so by the way.

Saying things like imho everybody is UNDERreacting.
if this site is so bloody narrowminded stop using it for your promotion of dubstep.. all you cats are doing is trying to leech away people from dnb.

and if murdock believes it's a good idea well he's wrong! is something I have a hard time to believe in.
Leeching people away from drum and bass?! This kind off reaction surely can only come out of personal frustration with your own scene (i hope)?
I'm happy that Murdock is willing to give dubstep a chance on his radio show and i'm sure people can still make up their own mind about liking a music genre or not. So what if people prefer dubstep over drum and bass, it stays a matter of choice.
Besides this, having another music genre played in between jungle cannot hurt anyone, in my opinion these mutual influences can only lead to good things. Really, I don't understand why people have such a hard time with combining different styles, being stuck with only one genre and being overprotective over it will only kill it anyway. And yeah Jungle Fever is a show that promotes drum and bass, but what difference does it make when maybe half an hour dubstep gets played on a show that lasts 2 hours, can't see the harm in this.
Anyway, just want to say respect to Murdock for giving dubstep the chance to be played on national radio.

Oris Jay AKA Darqwan AKA DQ1 (Texture Recordings), Sheffield based dj, producer and remixer.

How long have you been working in music?
Oris Jay: I've been dj-ing for about 17 years, producing about 6 years.

What's the difference between your aka's?
Oris Jay: Oris Jay is my name, I do my production under Darqwan. I came up with Darqwan when I started my productions so I could be more experimental, if that didn't work out, I could just delete the name. I dj under Oris Jay, it's the name you will find on flyers, if I do collaborations it might be under Oris Jay.

What's your opinion on the evolution of the garage scene?
Oris Jay: I think garage back in the day, after the Dreem Team, made a 4 way split into broken beat, breakz, grime and dubstep. Due to some mc's who weren't behaving (e.g. So Solid Crew), it gave garage a bad name, and some people didn't want to be tied to the name garage anymore.That's when all the other genres came in.

What direction is it you went in?
Oris Jay: I always followed my own direction, people can call my music whatever they want. I don't make a certain genre, my music is more about a tempo which tries to incorporate different kinds of sounds. My influences can even be found in acid house, techno, funky house, dnb.

Your label Texture is bringing out a record of Loefah, how do you feel about his production?
Oris Jay: Yeah Sukkah by Loefah is coming out on Texture 10. I like his production, from the beginning when he was making music, his tracks always sounded different. It's good to have Loefah doing a little guest appearance on my label.

What other dubstep artists do you like?
Oris Jay: Benga, Skream Ntype, Mala, Caspa.

Anyone you want to work with?
Oris Jay: To be honest, I look at it, I want to work with whoever can hold his own, if a producer can bring as much on the table as me, then we're in. I would rather not carry someone on.

You've been doing back2back's with El-B, would you like to do any collaboration with him?
Oris Jay: I like to play sets with him, he's from the oldskool like me, we are on the same level. At the moment he's also working on his comeback, but our styles are very different, so the odds for a collaboration tune seem quiet far, but you never know, everything is possible, there have been more stranger collaborations.

Whats the scene like in Sheffield?
Oris Jay: There's a big difference between London and Sheffield. You can compare Sheffields size with Picadilly. They maybe got one or two dubstep promotions in a month.
I like London because there's always something going on, no matter what day. But in Sheffield when there's a party the whole village comes out. So I have to say I like a bit of both.

You play often in London?
Oris Jay: I dont play a lot in London, I do more worldwide stuff, Australia, Baltimore, NY, Thaiwan, pretty much the whole world. But I'm a Belgium virgin to be honest.

Where can we see you play this summer
Oris Jay: Sonar (Barcelona) is going to be big, with me, Skream, Kode 9, Mary Ann Hobbs and Burial.

Any good moments? Any expectations?
Oris Jay:Being a dj and producer, you get to have a lot of good moments, it's all good really, you get to meet a lot of nice people, see a lot of nice places. I'm just going to keep going until no one is interested anymore.

What is it you are playing tonight?
Oris Jay: Mainly dubstep, but i'll throw in some more breaky stuff, and digg a bit after some oldskool.

Quest (Antisocial Entertainment) and Kromestar AKA Ironsoul AKA Droid (Terraphonix).

Explain Antisocial Entertainment and Terraphonix
Kromestar: I'm in a crew called Terraphonix, together with Mc Cessman. He should have normaly been here this evening, but couldn't make it.
Quest: Silkie started Anti Social, Heny G played on Lush FM (station started by DJ Luck and Mc Neat) and I was on after him. We all met eachother trough music. Later we moved to React.
I always heard about Silkie, and once he came to the radiostudio, he heard my beats, and told me he was looking for producers for his new project Antisocial, and then I joined. All the dj's have the same mindset, but if you take us apart we are still strong. For instance Kromestar still works on seperate projects, but he stays part of the Antisocial camp, everyone has got his own freedom.

Are you both used to play together?
Quest: We met eachother at FWD, Kromestar just joined Antisocial, I know him for a while now. We did a radioshow 2 weeks ago and we are definitely going to do that more frequently. We don't see eachother that often, but we're on the same level.
Kromestar: We liked eachother sounds, mutual liking of eachothers beats.
Dj's in antisocial all come from different parts of London, but we all got the same vision.

How are things working out in England?
Quest: It's going really well but we don't really work on our carreer, things are formed more naturally, people approach us. The scene is growing naturally, we wait for things to go on its natural cause.

And internationaly?
Kromestar: first time I played international.
Quest: for me it's my second time, I played in Paris together with Purple. We got a real good reception, people there knew the tunes and the lyrics. It was a good night.

Do all the aka's of Kromestar stand for different kinds of production?
Kromestar: Yeah definitely, I produce grime under Ironsoul. There are still other aliases but I want them to stay secret for a while.

Whats your opinion on the grime scene?
Quest: Grime has a lot of potential, but a lot of people don't have the right attitude, which detracts people from booking grime artists. Dubstep hasnt really taken over, but people can relate more to dubstep because its more about the music, grime is big with the younger kids, dubstep i feel is more mature.
Grime is staying at the level as where it is, they need a more mature crowd for the scene to grow, a lot of kids download and pass around tunes, so the sales go down.

What about upcoming production?
Quest: We want to big up Deapoh, because he's spreading the sound internationally, and Bare Dubs, my tune (Moodswings) is the first one, Ramadanman on the other side. We just want to big up that label, because its releasing artist that you would not normally hear.
Kromestar: Zulu Dance, Coruption Dub, with my sister Libra (producer) is also coming out on that label.

Quest, how would you define your production style?
Quest: Progressive, i'm not standing at one point, I'm not satisfied, always want to be better. There is always another level, it's very rarely i'm satisfied with a beat.

How about your radioshows?
Quest: Heny G, Jay5, Razor all play on Rinse, I've been offered guest shows, but i'm playing on React FM, we all started at that station, its my home, I feel I have to push Antisocial there.
Kromestar: I played with N-Type and Jay Five on Rinse and now I play on react with quest, last tuesday I was on Kiss with Hatcha, which was really good.
The good thing about the radioshows is even though they are at night, people still listen to them, and even sacrifice their work for the music. Same thing when we were younger, we used to listen to Delight when we had to go to school the day after.

You are both playing with Oris Jay tonight, has he been a big influence on you both?
Q + K: El-B, Oris Jay, Slaughter Mob, J Da Flex, they all got us into dubstep. It was at the point when garage was breaking into grime and dubstep. Back then it was called FWD music, when it was still in Velvet Rooms. For a lot of the dj's in the sound now he was a big influence. We used to buy a lot of his music.
Quest: I used to play garage, I started out as a dj in 98/97 but the levels of the tunes kinda dropped when garage progregressed into grime, so I decided to make my own tunes, thats what brought me into production.
We both have a classical musical background, me playing guitar, Kromestar piano.
We don't produce yet with live music, but we are trying to get to that. Software atm is the easiest and the most comfortable way.

You played at FWD yet?
Q + KNo not yet, but Antisocial is representing there, Heny G and Jay5 already played.
We're doing a b2b with Silkie and Heny G at the next DMZ.

You see a difference between the 2 nights (Dmz/Fwd)?
Quest: DMZ and FWD are both home but 2 totaly different vibes, FWD is cosier, comfortable, other producers feel like FWD is their home, people are outside mingeling, catching up with eachother.
Kromestar: FWD promotes grime and dubstep, DMZ has the roots of it all
Quest: Mala sees it all as music though, he tries to book various people. DMZ vibe is more pacier, and more international orientated. But they are both doing good things in the scene in a very different way.

Are you busy organising nights?
Quest: We may, we don't want to mention to much about that. There is a lot of things going on, I never had more faith in dubstep, there are a lot of good things coming up.

What are you both playing tonight?
Q+K: Really dancy tunes, music you can dance too. We're going to play a lot of unreleasd material, to see the reactions, testing the waters.

Quick short report:
Big night!
Only heard Oris Jay and about an hour of Kromestar and Quest, but I had a really nice time!
Seriously huge set by Oris Jay, really loved the different styles he played, going from Old Skool Oris, to New Skool, to breakz, dubstep....Anti War Dub, Maximum Respect, Rob One 7, Said the Spider, Brand Nu Flava, too much to mention.
Really enjoyed all the records he played, and mixed in one of the best ways I ever heard! Nice to see the crowd being challenged a bit by the various tempo's he brought. Was hoping to hear a little bit more garage, but the crowd seemed to like the dubstep sounds he played more, so can't blame Oris Jay.
Definitely hope this wasn't the last time i'm going to see him play.
Happy about seeing Kromestar, he's definitely one of my favourite dubstep producers, really pleased about him replacing Benga, Big up Quest for the last minute travel and the good hosting!
Always good vibes on Stainage, the crowd seemed to love it again. Big up Grimelock and Boups.
Happy to see Dice, Phonetics, Catharsis, Janner, Wasp, Lady Lite, Kim en Joris, Carl. And mr Hughes coming all the way from Lille.

Grimelock Presents B DUBS

Finaly the long awaited mix by Grimelock has arrived!
Strictly Brussels production!

About Grimelock:
Starting out in 1998 as a drum and bass collective, Grimelock already has come a long way in music. In 2004 they discovered Plasticman on Nuit Blanche, and decided to play grime, dubstep and dark garage. The year after, they released 2 mixes, which received a good response. But it wasn't for last year, when dubstep saw it's growing point in Belgium, that the bookings started to arrive. They played together with Youngsta, Skream, ThinKing, Scan One, Kode9, Distance, Maximum, Chef, Geeneus, Plastician, Roll Deep, JME, Skepta. 2006 brought the release of 2 other mixes (The 27 murderers and Doggy Style), now with own production. Not only were they working on own music, they also started a new party concept called Stainage. After already promoting successful parties together with Boups (Le Gazon, Nuit Blanche...), they created a strictly grime and dubstep evening with names like Plastician, D1, Geeneus, Youngsta, Riko Dan, Slimzee, Hatcha and Crazy D, but also gave their support to local dj's and producers. Their personal production, with tracks like The City, Brussels Target, Night Ridder, Ghost Town and Little Soldier, can be described as blending dark sub bass influenced music with grime beats. Bringing variation with some more uptempo beats in Pepper Jack, Test Your Mind and Kawal.
Grimelock describe their own sound as combining the powerfull bass of dubstep and grime
with the uk garage and 4x4 sound. The dark sounds that used to attract
them in drum and bass are finding a way into their own production.
They also worked together with friends and fellow producers Alchemyst and Saviour (both part of the Grimelock team) and Bunzer0. 2007 promises to be a big year for Grimelock with the release of their strictly own production mix called B Dubs and the addition of 2 new mc's Dynamic and Maelan to their crew. Stainage continues in spring with the 4th edition and assures to be another quality party, with international guest Benga, Oris Jay and Mc JSD

Already receiving worldwide positive reactions, steps into the international world of grime and dubstep are hopefully soon to be made.
Keep your eye on them, because lots of big things are going to follow!

Not much more to say then that VK seriously needs to do something about their promo.
Surely Hughes didnt feel like playing in front of an empty room!
Skepta and Maximum started later then expected, because again there were no people. But as soon as they started a little crowd appeared and gave them their support. Half an hour later JME joined Skepta on the mic.
I, for myself, think they gave an excelent performance. It would have definitely been huge if the crowd was a lot bigger.
After them Grimelock took over with A LOT of mc's (what was that about?), didn't really mind in the beginning, but after a while, some of them were really annoying me big time. Some people really should not be allowed on a mic.
Out of all them, i liked Maëlan the most, too bad the microphone didn't really get passed a lot in his direction.
Myeah anyway, Grimelock delivered a good set.
We left at about 2, i think the party didn't really end later then that.

Apart from bad promo, i can't really think of an explanation for the lack of people.
Sure Grime isn't really that big in Belgium, but I expected a lot more people! Most have been a huge disapointment for all the people who performed.

Shouts to all people who were in attendance, especially Bau, Stijn, Kim and Joris.

Finaly after my looong sleep my report is here:

Leaving the Midi station at 6 o'clock and being 2 hours and a half on a lonely train, I arrived at 7.30 local time in London.
After cruising trough the metro (glad I knew my way a bit) I entered Brixton at 8, right at the same time as the whole Belgian crew.
We started to queue, in an already big line, but realised later that there was a special entrance for international guestlist. After passing trough the hands of some realy mean security lady, we entered pretty early. Too late for Benny Ill though. Dave Q already started, I didn't realy like his selection that much, but he had the crowd jumping on some of his records.

Then Chef and LD...WOW...playing great record after great record, and some real nice combo's, definitely a big set! The place was already on fire and it was only 10 o'clock!
Chef seems to have his own version of every Skream record by the way.
After them Distance and Pinch hit the decks, serious bass in your face....but it was really getting too crowded by then. Mala took the mic and announced they were opening a second room downstairs because there were too much people that wanted to get in! So after been pushed around for half an hour we decided to check out that room downstairs, not really that much people there at that point, but what a soundsystem! The sound was A LOT better then upstairs. But the airco killed us a bit, it was freezing (now I know why Loefah always wears a scarf!), so we got back to the upstairs room where Benga and Cyrus already started. Nice combination of 2 different styles. I was sooo hungry at that point and we could not get out!

Headed back to the downstairs, where we discovered some NICE chairs, too nice maybe because we stayed there for a very very long time. The bass was absolutely crazy there, lying in the chairs you could feel every part of your body shake! I got up a few times to enjoy some music by Mala, Loefah, Cyrus, Chef, LD, Pinch, Distance, Sgt Pokes (who was a lot better then last time in Brussels), best host of the evening for me, the other mc Phazeman (I think?) seriously killed my ears with his shouting. And then I fell asleep...shit...woke up an hour later...how is that possible! Wasnt really the only one, Panzar seemed to like the couch very much, and so did Dizzie. At that point Youngsta was hitting it hard in an almost empty room, damn I really liked the last couple of records he played! Because the room was so empty, Dizzie and I went back upstairs, where...suprise suprise...we entered a FULL room! Skream, Hatcha and Hijack were giving the crowd some real entertainment, too bad that last mix by Skream failed hehe.
After them the strangest combo of the evening started: Kode 9 b2b Man of Plastic. Both behind computers. Liked both of their selection, and maybe I would have wanted to stay a bit longer, but Dice wanted to leave...And indeed after almost 10 hours of Dubstep my ears needed their rest.
Heading down a closed metro, we waited a bit, then decided to take the bus. And arrived after a while at Waterloo. I wasnt really that tired at that point, we had a good laugh with some flyers, a fork, and one sleeping man.
Happy I bought my tickets last thursday, had a good time with some nice and crazy people.
So much big tunes, but I guess that tutututu...(what was it? Edit: found it Night - Benga & Coki) captured it all ; ).

Short report, because of a real last minute decision, one that I definitely did not regret making!
Had a real good time in the 2 hours and a half I was there.
Missed out on Pinch, heard a couple of his last records, but too little to comment on that.
Gutted I missed him though, because last time @ Tavernier he was really good...from what other people told me last night was as good, maybe better.
Enjoyed Loefahs set, even though he did not seem to have a good time himself, good mixing (did not really notice the needleskipping...) and heavy bass records. The beginning of Mala sounded sooo good, nice reggae vibes, but I was way too tired to stay longer.
Good party with a lot of people and deep soundsystem. Certainly not my last time there.
Shouts to Sarge, always good company and thanks to Leila and Fleur, had a super time with you 2 girls x

Been digging the sounds of dark garage for a while now, so i tought about putting something about it on my blog.
A while ago Mary Anne Hobbs had Oris Jay and El-B as her guests, and I happened to find the mp3 of the mix they did on her show. Check it out below.

Oris Jay aka Darqwan and DQ 1 (Texture Recordings) has been influenced by dark edgy dnb and the vibe of 2-step and UK Garage.
He's know by his tracks Biggin' up the Massive, Said the Spider, Raisin Kane and Trippin'.

Yesterdayevening I went to the Kulturama festival at Stuk, met up with Mizz Irizz at 20.30 so we were there really early.

Not too much people inside. BunZer0 definitely had no easy job standing alone behind his decks in the middle of the room.
Things changed when the Virus Syndicate stepped up, even though there were not too much people, they really got the crowd going from the beginning.
In comparison to Mark One's performance in the Beursschouwburg 3 weeks ago, i can definitely say that yesterday was much better, and that probably was because of the mc assistance he had.
Damn did they create a vibe!

Best mc for me was Nika D, cutest one goes out to Goldfinger ;). Cool refix of Sweet Dreams by the way.

After them it was time for Kode 9 and the Spaceape. Totally different atmosphere.
The first part was a live performance, some people seemed to enjoy it, other not at all. Had the feeling that i should have smoked a lot to really get into it ;), with Spaceapes hypnotising lyrics and the mesmerizing video.
Cruised a bit trough the room during that part, saw Yello and Yoshi, always present and had a little chatty chat with BunZer0.
People weren't really moving, but that changed as soon as Kode9 started to hit the decks.
Cool to see the Virus Syndicate making a party.

After Kode9 and Spaceape, BunZer0 hit the decks again, but Virus Syndicate weren't tired yet, so they did a back2back session.
What to say...3 wasted mc's make a serious party?!! Biggest tune at the moment for me is definitely Chimpo - Kryptonite, it set the room on fire!
Big up to that over the top Chinese guy who wanted to show of his dancemoves.
Shouts to my company: Irizz with the magical disapearance act (too bad that did not end well), Stijn, Dizzie, Carl and Jochen.

Ideal post-exam party! It was biiig!

We entered when Dice and Kastor/gotc were playing and allready a lot of people were there to enjoy their set.
They seemed to have a good time behind the decks, which is always a nice thing to see.
After them Alchemyst started his live set, which started dark and ended nice with test your mind (I love that one!).

While he played Slimzee, Hatcha, Geeneus and Crazy D arrived.
I was a bit dissapointed by Slimzee because I expected him to play some old skool garage, apart from that he really looked like he was not up for it, so luckily Geeneus took over a couple of times.

Anyway different vibe with Hatcha and Crazy D, they set the place on fire! Had such a good time, crazy party set!
Not really a good move to forget your mic Mr Crazy D...but you delivered a great mc job. (wow wow wow)

Finaly Grimelock (supported by mc's): ending in style, best set i've ever seen from you 2!
Conclusion: another HUUUGE Stainage party, nice people, great sound, cool location etc...
Cool to see Dice, Bau, Kim and Jorisyello, Miss Spelf, Pablex and Jo.
Thank you to Fleur, Eline and Stijn for the company, and big up to the Marseille boys (totally forgot about your names), for coming all the way to Brussels. Big up Renaud (?) for the much needed snacks ;).

Didn't really think I would have made it to this one because of my exams, but after last minute desicion, we arrived in Bxl.
After enjoying some niiice special caipirinha's (thank you Jan crossover), we went to the Beursschouwburg... a bit late, so we missed out on BunZer0. Apparantly you rocked the chair!
Sound was quiet in the back, so we headed to the front.
Mark One brought some dirty beats with him, but it lacked an mc I guess, and maybe I expected a bit more grime from him.
Enjoyed it anyway. After only one hour, Loefah and Sgt Pokes took over...and bass it was!
Sgt Pokes dissapointed me a bit, loved him when I saw him in London, in my opinion he didn't really hype the crowd yesterday.
I think he forgot about our request for a joke...did he?
Last one was Mate, I missed out on you because of my fainting company and her pitta, heard later you did a nice job!
Overal the crowd was quiet (or I was deaf), could have had a bit more atmosphere, but apart from that I really had a good night out!

Out to my regulars Carl and Sandra! Nice to see Jochen (long time!), Mate, Yello and lovely girlfriend, Mr Phonetics and Maarten. We missed you Stijn!
Thank you Bunzee for the party, hope you recover well, make sure we see you nice and well next week!

This guy must be my discovery of the week, what a relieve to find someone that actually tries to combine dubstep and grime with other genres!
Lately i've been pretty bored to hear 'all dubstep' mixes, so finding this mix was a true a relieve.
I'm definitely hoping this can be an inspiration to other dj's, to try and create a refreshing sound.

As far as music goes DJ Slimzee was influenced from an early age by people such as Michael Jackson, Madonna,George Michael,Eddy Grant and bands like Duran Duran and Squeeze. As for Radio Stations it has to be Kool, Deflection, Weekend Rush, Index and Touchdown FM with DJ Younghead, Pugwash (for his heavy tunes) Trace (4 his mixing) and LT Stitch (Old School Don) Plus MC's Fearless, X2, Rhyme Time, Shabba, Skibba, Ragga Twins and Moose

DJ Slimzee started mixing Hardcore in 1992, the first Hardcore record he bought was was shine eye by the Ragga Twins (Shut up and dance for all the Anoraks Reading) and from then on the Record buying drug had started. The shops that i used back in thoses days (92/93) were Total Music, Pauls 4 Music, Unity and Blackmarket. His Pirate career started in 1993 on Fusion FM mixing early Jungle and although it was'nt a big station he knew that i wanted to do this for a living.

DJ Slimzee started on Rinse FM on Carnival day in 1995 under the DJ name Slimfast with Beenie and Geeneus at the time we were broadcasting on 91.8 fm. "We had DJs such as Trend, Target Caspa and MCs such as Mega, Beenie, Gemmi and Nitrate at this time i couldn't have imagined how things would turn out! especially cos i seemed to spend all my early radio life either on a tower block or trying to catch up with some sleep in the studio.Through 95-97 i played on other stations such as Pressure and Chillin but always stuck with Rinse through thick and thin. At these times i was doing back2back shows with Caspa then later on with Geeneus with MCs Mega, Shauny J, Viz, Excalibur and Beenie. The station started getting bigger and soon we had talented D+B boys such as Maxwell D, Brown Bros (Plague and Paco) and Riko etc. I also got my first real booking (apart from house party) in late 95 at Sunnyisles nightclub in Bow. After that the bookings gradually got more frequent."

In about 97/98 DJ Slimzee decided to switch to UK Garage and also decided on a name change, Slimfast was out and Slimzee was in!! Rinse was now on 100.3 and played UK Garage only on Sundays. "My show was 3-5 then and still is now. I had D.U.B and Paco MCing for me in those days (Pre Pay as you Go) and trust me when i say we used to butt it up. Then Plague and Paco MC'd for me (s double p show) for a while then just Plague on his own. This was when PAUG was born! Major joined up with us a couple of weeks after and we started doing as much Radio work as we could. Between me, Geeneus, Plague and Major Ace i think we did every Station on FM"

"The first Pay as you go Cartel Booking came in 1999 in Barking and after we smashed it there our names started to get talked about around town. By 2000 PAUG were starting to get a good few Bookings around London/Essex and this is when we decided to bring in Gods Gift. Whilst we were doing our thing, LadiesHit Squad (Target, Whiley and Maxwell) were also getting a big name and because we shared similair ideas and knew each other from back in the days we joined forces to make P.A.U.G Cartel. Through 2001 our name was getting Bigger and Bigger resulting in some major Bookings. I really noticed how big we were getting at Sidewinders 2nd Birthday at the Santuary Milton Keynes in April 2001. Then when we were asked to hold our Birthday in conjunction with them i knew big things were happening. It was around this time that bookings for abroad started coming in and we went overseas and represented in the best way we knew how. By butting it up!! and spreading the name as we went. Also at that time we were in talks with Sony over the signing of our 12in Champagne Dance which as you know didnt do to bad! 2002 is now here and with our newest member FlowDan we are ready to take over the world! All i can say is im very fortunate to be where i am and i appriciate it 100%. We are working more and even harder then ever and i continue to cut as many Plates as i can HA HA!!! I really hate top tens and/or awards, because they never truly do justice to the people behind the tunes, nights, shows, etc.
Top tens for example tend to lean towards those tunes freshest in memory.
That being said I think it is safe to repeat what I have posted on www.breakz.be:

this year was just too big!

I couldn't for the life of me begin at composing a top ten for the year, but I will give you this:

for releasing those bombs in the past year! May the next be as prosperous and adventurous!

If there was really one number one it would be this:

are all the producers on dubstepforum.com, myspace, etc that have proven that good music is being produced in every little corner of the planet, some with little means but big results!

out to the unsigned or up and coming talent out there!

therefor an unsigned top list for me that still leaves me unsatisfied as there are at least 10 tracks I want in there:

Late review, but its here:
Due to personal problems not a good party for me...sorry to the people who talked to me, and got a not so friendly reply!

Anyway, entered when Plastician played, sound was really bad! We tought it was a limiter at first, but Bunzer0 gave me a detailed explanation of what was wrong ;-) hehe (nice to meet you btw)...throw away the serato I would say.
After Plastician the sound went up! Big bass...the crowd loved it.

Kode 9 gave us a look into the broad spectrum of dubstep, going from ragga vocal tracks, taking it really deep and ending it nice with some party tunes.

Party tunes is what Skream brought, as expected...! "Are you all ready for the dj Skream?"
Remembered really smooth tracks like: Give it Back (D1), Tears (Hijak), Summer Dreams (Skream)...People went crazy on the Anti War Dub vs Tapped track...but I guess I missed the crowdresponse during the night, it was all a bit quiet sometimes.
Bunzer0 and the Grimelock boys finished it all in style, Bunzer0 gave the crowd some nice brock out times on Knowledge (ToastyBoy, I love this one!), Praise Jah (Afterdark), the Justin TL remix, Tortured etc... cool combination with the grime and 4x4 ;-) (where was my dj q tune?!) Grimelock brought.
Nice to see Jo present, Carl, and Sandra finaly again! Sorry to the people who i apparantly missed...

What a party!? I guess when you still feel awfull 2 days after, it must have been great!
And it was...After enjoying a 'champagne'-birthdayparty at my friends house, we headed to Plan B.
Just in time to see a good hour of Bunzer0, which was really good, but the first dj always has the hardest job, especially when there are not too many people inside, but he created an atmosphere!

Then Geeneus and Mc Riko stepped up. At this time a lot of people had entered, so the party really started.
I guess Mc Riko must have been hated by all you non-grime, non-mc lovers, because you couldn't get him away from his mic, but i liked it!

Geeneus played all the tunes you wanted to hear, bodycount - ironsoul, knowledge - toastboy, tortured - coki (must be the best partytune of the year, it makes the room explode everytime it gets played!).

Nice to see Lady Lite and Wasp turning up, and enjoying it!

Youngsta's set seems to be a bit of a blank here, I remember havin loads of fun at the front with my girls, but I can't remember anything he played
(<---blame the vodka)... but still...Youngsta is and stays the best dubstep dj for me! Everyone seemed to like what he was doing, so I saw a lot of happy faces!

Nice to see Yello and his girl again! Also rememberd seeing panzar, carl, phonetics, kyulo... sorry to all the people who did not understand ???? of what i was saying.
Totally forgot about you Bun, but i'll guess we'll talk soon!
It was nice to hear some grime at the end of the night, big up Hughes, you played lots of great tracks, especially Str8 flush!
Saw only a little part of the Grimelock boys + Saviour, so cannot really comment on that.

All together this was definitely the best party of the year, great atmosphere, lovely people, nice music, cool venue, great sound, big bass.... allready looking forward to the next one!
